We Need Your Help
STEPS is one of the few university simulation centers to own the CAE Vimedix AR system, the first holographic computer that allows you to freely move and interact with your environment while learning new skills and procedures without risk to patients.
We currently have four HoloLens, but due to the rapid growth of our program, we need to purchase additional HoloLens to be able to teach large groups of students at one time. One HoloLens costs approximately $5,000 to purchase.
All donations will directly support STEPS and will enable us to purchase an additional HoloLens! If we meet our goal of raising $5,000 (the cost of one HoloLens), a generous match will go towards the campaign! Please know your donation today will build upon the accomplishments of the past and move healthcare training into the future!
Our Mission And Project Goal
Our mission is to advance healthcare education and promote innovative educational research, leading to improved patient care and safety.
Simulation learning has taken the training world by storm. Accreditation requirements of a number of residencies now require simulation as part of the formal curriculum. Patient simulator manikins and Virtual Reality (VR) training offers challenging experiences that support future health care professionals in developing team and decision-making skills.
“Using the HoloLens on the CAE Vimedix AR system allows me as a medical student to have a better grasp at how a clinical ultrasound image fits with the anatomy I’ve learned. Seeing the augmented reality alongside a simulated ultrasound deepens my understanding of how this all comes together at the bedside with a real patient. Any training modality that allows me to be more well-rounded as a future physician is one worth using! The HoloLens really does help with student learning from the first time you put it on and look at the Simulation!” -Jeffery Cannon
How To Help
Contribute today! All proceeds raised through donation, whether small or large, will go towards STEPS and help us purchase the HoloLens!
Spread the word! Ask your family, friends, and co-workers to help share the campaign.
Who We Are
The Health Sciences Center at West Virginia University—with the help of past generous donors—built a premier simulation facility named the David and Jo Ann Shaw Center for Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety (STEPS). STEPS is a state-of-the-art center for experiential learning using simulation and virtual reality equipment. Within 19,000 square feet of instructional space, students recreate potential scenarios. STEPS houses four ICU setups with life-like manikins, two 10-bed open lab spaces for practicing a variety of skills including ultrasound, 12 patient exam rooms for physical diagnosis and communication, a room for OB and Pediatric practice, a surgical skills unit, and more.
