It’s scholarship season, 4-H’ers!

And, we are calling for your help to raise money in support of fellow campers.  In the spirit of friendly camp competition, we are inviting you to support your favorite 4-H tribe in the Camp Challenge. You can leave a legacy for generations of West Virginia 4-H’ers to come by supporting 4-H camp scholarships.

Thoughts from a Cherokee

“If you happen to visit Historic Jackson’s Mill and stop by council circle, you will notice five tall, wood carved poles. The wood carvings hold symbols that represent the spirit of each tribe in WV 4-H.  For my tribe, the Cherokee, the word ‘amity’ is shown prominently on our pole. When I think of growing up as a Cherokee, ‘amity’ is the first word that comes to mind. Being a Cherokee meant building friendships year after year at Jackson’s Mill and growing together as a group. Everyone listens and learns from each other. Going to tribal meetings became my favorite part of 4-H camp activities. It was the time to spend with campers I looked up to—no matter if they were older or younger than myself. The pride we felt working together on songs and funny skits came from knowing that every voice was equal in the Cherokee tribe. As I have moved beyond the 4-H camping program, I can lean on the cooperation mindset being a Cherokee instilled in me. And I can continue to look to those who came before and that which is yet to come.”
