Speak Easy for Cancer

The annual WVU Cancer Gala supports critical research and patient care taking place at the WVU Cancer Institute – and provides much needed family comfort at one of life’s most challenging times.  The necessary cancellation of this year’s 1920’s themed Gala has left the Institute nearly $1 million short on funds that would have been generated from our in-person event.

For 34 years, our loyal friends of the Cancer Institute have made the Gala the “not to be missed” event of the season.  I cannot tell you how much that support has meant to the mission and to the patients those funds have sustained. Now, however, the Institute must lean on its long-time patrons and beloved community to fund the critical needs left unfilled by the loss of Gala revenue due to COVID-19.

The team at the WVU Cancer Institute continues to press forward in its mission to positively impact the health and wellness of those they treat.  Thanks in large part to funds raised by past Galas, the Institute has implemented innovative treatments for patients while also ensuring inclusive care.  Our WVU Cancer Institute now has the only cancer-focused psychiatrist and physical therapist in West Virginia. And, in collaboration with the WVU Heart & Vascular Institute, a clinic was established which focuses on heart issues that are associated with cancer treatment.

Additionally, and excitingly, the Institute is presently working to fund the launch of a new mobile lung cancer screening program that will build on the successes of Bonnie’s Bus. This initiative offers great potential to aid those affected by nicotine addiction, as well as all other West Virginians at risk for lung cancer. There is much to celebrate but we cannot stop - because cancer does not stop!

Included on this page are a handful of suggested donation levels which align with traditional Gala giving, such as that which comes in the form of event tickets, sponsorships, and special giving. Please know that these suggested levels are merely guides and that the entire WVU Cancer Institute community is grateful for the consideration and support of every donor, at every level. I am so very proud of what we have accomplished together and I am thankful for the added support this Speak Easy for Cancer will provide for our care givers and our patients.

With appreciation,

Laurie Erickson
