When it comes to patient care, experience is everything. At The David and Jo Ann Shaw Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety center (STEPS), students in the WVU Health Sciences are learning life-saving procedures, developing interprofessional communication skills, and using new technologies, before they get into patient care environments.
The STEPS center houses patient simulators ranging from premature babies to adults, including ultrasound able models. State of the art technology and a highly adaptable simulation set from student learners to hospital professionals – fosters analytical, diagnostic and communication skills. STEPS is expanding its emphasis on diversity and inclusion training and are attempting to purchase manikins and simulators that better represent a more diverse population.
With your donations, STEPS will add a patient simulator of color to its current group of mannequins. The SUSIE® 2000 is an advanced patient simulator. Learners will be able to speak to SUSIE and listen to provider’s responses via wireless streaming voice. The simulator can illustrate seizures, eye dilation, reactivity, and blink. Students will be able to practice tracheostomy care procedures, nasal intubation, monitor blood pressure, monitor CPR metrics, and attach ECG electrodes to monitor rhythms.
